BACKGAMMON
IN  CAMDEN

Tuesday 11th July 2006

72 Entries, 11 Tournaments, 40 Players, £920 Prize Fund,
Nicky Check wins Jackpot and Ken Kunduh wins the Quiz.

Yet another month when the date was put back by a week - this time because of the Football World Cup. But this move was a good one because we raised our attendance back into the 40s. 9 new Bg in Camden Players this month - here's hoping we'll see them again.

It was a gorgeous evening and Players made use of the balcony tables where they could though a number of them were taken by other punters - we had the whole of the inside of the Lockside Lounge which meant nobody was pushed for space.

The Jackpot only went up to £50 which meant the total Prize fund was unlikely to hit the £1000 - it didn't - just a measly £920 was played for! All tournaments were kept to a maximum 8 Player (5 x 8 Players and 4 a 4 Players) and all but one Tournament was played out by 11.15 p.m.

The one Tournament (4) not played by then had started at 7.30 and included a good number of first time Tournament Players. The last of it's Semi-Finals was completed at 11.00 which meant that those 5 pointer matches had taken an average of 70 minutes each! (I usually budget 45 minutes max. for a 5 pointer.) However the two Finalists are friends and they played the Final at Parvin's house the next day. That's not to say Parvin won - she didn't - that honour went to Pete.

At his 4th attempt it was Nicky Check who won the Jackpot (1st) Tournament - a nice little warm-up win for him to defend the Biba Backpacker Trophy that he won last year and that will be played for again in September.

Other Winners were: Jo Davies (nee Curl), Alan Beckerson, Ray Fard, Paul White, Ken Kunduh, Bicous, Mourad, Jon Samuel and George M.

The Quiz (a very good one this month) was won by Ken on his first visit to Bg in Camden. He was the only entrant to get all three plays correct, though many were very close on the tie-breaker question.
