BACKGAMMON
IN  CAMDEN

Tuesday 7th November 2006

68 Entries, 10 Tournaments, 44 Players, £1160 Prize Fund,
George Miltiadou wins the Jackpot.

Player numbers was down slightly this month - only 44. Is this a worry? No, not at all. For a starter it's winter so outside play on the balcony is not where players want to be (though I think a few hardly souls did do so under the heaters) and The Lockside Lounge had accepted a birthday party booking to occupy the sunken section - I need to have further words with them on this matter - so with the addition of a few extra tables we just about had enough room for all matches to proceed. But the biggest reason that numbers were down this week is that some geezer called MikeMadMonk is running another backgammon event in London this weekend where over 100 people will be attending. So 44 turning up to BG in Camden 4 days before the annual Backgammon Live in London is a more than respectable number.

The star of the show this evening was George Miltiadou. For the first time in living memory he entered the 1st Tournament of the evening - The Jackpot - and won it. Has he adopted a long term strategy in improving his tournament play over the last few months in the smaller entry tournaments and this month reaping the rewards of his self-training by entering and winning the big one? If so is George our "Special One?" He's about the right height though I'm happy to say he doesn't employ the gamesmanship that Jose M. does. Bravo George.

Al Hogg did his usual of entering the Jackpot Auction, dropping out when the money went up higher than he was willing to play for, then playing in what I'm now calling the 2nd Jackpot and this month winning it.

In the "mass entry" £10 entry 8 player, 5 pointers that kicked off next it was (an unusually quick playing) Mick V. and a delayed Andy B. (had been hoping to enter the Jackpot but was delayed in what sounded like a horrible experience manner) who won Tournaments 3 and 4.

T5 was the £5 entry, 8 player, 5 pointers. This is now very much part of the staple diet of the evening and allows those that are maybe not so good at backgammon and don't want to invest quite so much money in a tournament. 6 players signed up as soon as they could for it and the remaining two slots were taken by players tat arrived at about 7.40. Once again Ian T. got to the final but once again he came second place in it - this month it was Tim S. who took the honours.

T6 was another 8 player, £10 entry, 5 pointer - this time the players were more 7.45 pm+ arrivals and those knocked out of earlier tournaments. This was the last tournament of the evening to complete ended by Peter B. taking a re-cube that had it not been so late e wouldn't have taken - a shame that - I'd have been happier to see him drop it and play on despite the fact that the staff were putting chairs on tables in other parts of the pub a good few minutes before they needed to do so. Geoff C. was the victor.

T7 was a 4 player, £25 entry, 7 pointer for those knocked out of T1 & T2. Mourad continued his good run from last month and won this.

T8 was an 8 player, £5 entry, 5 pointer for those knocked out of earlier Tournaments and was won by Monica B.

T9 was a 4 player, £10 entry, 5 pointer and was also won by Mourad - a name to be considerable respected.

T10 was a 4 player, £5 entry, 5 pointer for those that just couldn't get enough and was won by Simon M. who is a consistent winner these days.

Summary:

So another good evening of bg though a little squashed for space I'm sorry to say. I'll be having a meeting with The Lockside Lounge next week to sort out this problem before it becomes unbearable.

As mentioned it's Backgammon Live in London this weekend. On the whole the event is now fully booked. If you have not registered but are thinking of coming along it is essential, for you own sake, to contact me before coming along otherwise you're likely not to be able to even get a seat to play.

Of course Player feedback is vital, so if you have any comments of questions please do not hesitate to email or phone me:
