60 Entries, 8 Tournaments, 39 Players, £1,200
Prize Fund
Nicky Check wins the Jackpot.
Once again we had enough players for two jackpots this month – one at £80,
and one at £25. A prompt start as usual, and by 7.15 pm, we had 16 players
playing. Nicky Check and Michael Michael met in the final of the main
jackpot having swept past the Jons (Barnes and Samuel) and the Fleischs
(Michael and Daniel). Nicky was willing to reach an agreement on the prize
fund, but Michael was insistent on winner takes all. It transpired that
this was to Nicky’s benefit, since he won the match and took all the
money! As Nicky told me afterwards, this win had effectively paid his
entry to the Nordic Open in a month’s time – a trip I shall be sharing
with him. Look out Denmark!
The second jackpot featured some regular names, and ended in a final
between two who had seen this many times before, Simon Morecroft and Al
Hogg. Once again Simon walked away victorious. It seems to be a rare month
when Simon doesn’t win - only Jon Barnes seems to win with such
regularity. All that study must have paid dividends!
We then had a range of £10 and £5 tournaments, with the usual suspects
competing. Ritchie couldn’t quite repeat his (maiden) win from last month,
but the Croydon contingent still loomed large, dominating one of the
smaller tournaments, with Alex Polden taking the honours. Also a winner
again was Jon Kinsey. A very strong player, who not only learns from the
bots (gnubg), but writes them as well! William S. and Romolo were
victorious in two of the £10 tournaments, and Mike Island swept all before
him in the remaining £5 knock-out.
Once again things seemed to run smoothly enough without Mike’s presence,
although I understand Sue Keeble has reversed her initial judgement (made
last month, when she won), that Mike needn’t return in a hurry. Having
lost this month, she feels that Camden backgammon would be better off back
in Mike’s hands. Well I’ll tell him, but I doubt it will be enough to
persuade him to cut short his trip down under.
So until next time – 3rd April 2007
