48 Entries, 7
Tournaments, 33 Players, £830 Prize Fund,
Jon Barnes wins Jackpot.
A quieter meeting this month. Not only are we in the middle of the Easter
holiday season, April happens to be the busiest month in the UK backgammon
calendar, with tournaments held in the Cotswolds, Manchester, as well as
BIBA and Gammonitis, not mention a small affair in Denmark next week,
which will host a few British players. So 33 players wasn’t too bad.
The main jackpot kicked off promptly, as usual, and once again boasted a
very talented field, including Shino, Jon Barnes and last months winner,
Nicky Check. It was not to be a double for Nicky, who lost to Jon Barnes
in the second round. Shino’s luck was no better, losing to Phil Churton,
who met Jon in the final. Once again Jon went home victorious. This is the
fourth time Jon has won the main Jackpot, and the time is rapidly
approaching where we either christen the first knock-out The Jon Barnes
Jackpot, or commission a special award for him.
With only one large jackpot this month, the rest of the evening consisted
of a mixture of £10 and £5 tournaments. We had a couple of new players
this month, but beginners luck was not much in evidence. However, I’m not
sure Helen Helm-Sagar has attended much before. After loosing in the final
to Willie, Helen Helen reached another final, and this time she won it!
One loss in six matches – not bad for an evening’s work.
Also winners were Jon Samuel, Alan Beckerson, Vicky and Mahmoud. It was
good to see Jon after his illness recently, although unfortunately he
won’t now be accompanying Nicky, George and I to Denmark next weekend for
The Nordic Open. Next year then, Jon!
Unfortunately we still have no result from the cliff-hanger from a couple
of months ago between Parvin and Simon Gasquoigne. Looks like this one may
run and run.
Until next time – Tuesday 1st May 2007
