65 Entries, 7
Tournaments, 41 Players, £1720 Prize Fund,
Colin Owen wins Jackpot.
The first item of note is that this month produced the highest ever Prize
Fund at Backgammon in Camden - £1720. Admittedly that's only £10 up from
Feb '07 but that I feel is only splitting hairs. The salient fact is that
some players are investing good money at this event - is Backgammon in
Camden a serious event for backgammon money players? Unquestionably the
answer is yes. 18 players put their names up for the minimum £25 entry
Jackpot and it wasn't until the entry fee was bided up to £120 that only 8
players remained willing to pay the going entry fee. For those that
dropped out there was a second Jackpot of £50. The remaining 2 players
entered £10 Tournaments along with 20 other players. So just 30 minutes
after the evening was kicked off there were 38 players playing for £1580.
If anybody was questioning Adam Tansley's ability to run the evening (Mike
Main was on a walkabout in New Zealand) they never mentioned it and would
have had a hard time debating their case.
But Bg in Camden is not all about catering for those who want to play for
big money and I'm pleased to note that there were also more £10 and a £5
Tournament as well. With a total of 41 players in attendance I'm sure that
there must have been a great backgammon buzz in The Lockside Lounge on
this evening.
1st time Backgammon in Camden player Colin Owen not only entered the £120
Jackpot Tournament but produced a very impressive performance by winning
it as well. Given that one of his 3 scalps was twice ex British Champion
and backgammon books writer Paul Lamford I'm sure the name Colin Owen will
be noted on the bg circuit.
Likewise Dave Moon made his first appearance at Bg in Camden, entered the
2nd Jackpot and won it. This was most definitely an evening for the "new
boys".
Old hand Willie won Tournament 3 and another new to Bg in Camden player -
Regina - won Tournament 4. Make that "This was most definitely an
evening for the new boys and girls".
Just to keep the boys from thinking that bg is a mans game Helen won
Tournament 5 followed by Ray K winning Tournament 6 and Ritchie winning
Tournament 7.

Summary:
There wasn't a Phil Simborg Quiz this month. This was entirely the fault
of myself, Mike Main, who was busy getting flooded out on the west coast
of the South Island, New Zealand. That might sound like an excuse so
here's my evidence:

Honest guv, the riverbed was dry the evening before when I parked up in
it. I did wake up before this picture was taken but Zeawag, my campervan,
was already trapped by that stage. I naively thought the river would go
down as quickly as it was coming up, but it just kept on rising and rising
- another foot deeper than when this pic was taken. When it started going
down I slopped out of the river and went to the nearest farm for help. The
farmer had a huge digger with tank type tracks but even that couldn't go
into 5 foot deep rushing water to haul Zeawag out. So we went to the
nearest pub for a drink or two and some very deserved laughing at a
P.o.m.e. - me. Later that evening we returned to the slightly subsided
river and hauled Zeawag out. Incredibly Zeawag survived the experience
though it took 2 weeks to put her back together in full working order -
many thanx to the Johnson family who did the majority of the mechanical
work needed. The good news was that there was a backgammon board in a
lovely rimu tree table in the pub though I must admit that Dave the
Landlord thrashed me on it night after night. |
