BACKGAMMON
IN  CAMDEN

Tuesday 5th June 2007

46 Entries, 7 Tournaments, 33 Players, £1200 Prize Fund,
Edward Leighton wins Jackpot.

The Jackpot Tournament went up to a £100 entry fee - this sort of figure seems to be becoming the norm these days. This is the second time Edward Leighton has won the Jackpot - the previous was in August 2006. A steady player's results speak for themselves. In this months event Edward beat off Dod Davies, Jon Barnes and Nicky Check - hard work by anybody's standard which must have made the win even more satisfying for Edward.

There was also a 4 player £25 entry Tournament as well this month. This too w2as won by a steady player - Uldis Lapikens. Tournaments 3 was a £10 entry fee event which was won by Helen. Bravo to you too. Tournament was an optional £10 entry fee pool with just one player opting not to enter the pool. This was won by a man who should have come along months ago but finds it hard to make it into London during the week because he lives far from the madding crowd in the country - one Mr Richard Biddle. Just think how much more you could have won had you come along before but please don't let your good wife Caroline know I've written this!  Pete won Tournament 5, Dave Moon, in his second Bg in Camden, continued his good record by winning Tournament 6 and "never say die" Michael Flesch won Tournament 8 by beating just one other player.

Where was the Phil Simborg Quiz? Well that blasted Mike Main was away in New Zealand and forgot to do his bit in asking Phil to send a quiz over, so sorry folks, it didn't happen. And what was Mike Main doing in New Zealand? You can't take backgammon out of a backgammonist and even though he was supposed to be taking a break from backgammon he was playing in a Backgammon Tournament in Stratford, Taranaki, North Island, New Zealand! So here's a position that occurred in that event:

Summary:
The total Prize Fund was down from the previous month but then so where the player numbers. I don't think this is anything to worry about though I'm beginning to turn my attention to the percentage of players who are not returning for the second or third event. A large Prize Fund is all very well for those that can afford it and play to a high standard but that can also act as a brake for new players coming into the game. It's well known that I see my role in British Backgammon as a man who brings new players into live events. New players in any game are the life blood of the game. Without them play not only stagnates it also dies off because not everybody is going to continue in the game. So I find Bg in Camden in the alarming position of potentially harming itself probably because of the high Prize Fund. Ironic or what?
