"Brains and Drains outrolled their opponents in round
1, and the most
interesting problems occurred when they were leading 6-0
Crawford:
a) Running or staying back is always an interesting
problem. In the following
position James and Martine had a 6-2 to play and correctly
ran with 23/15.
Dod would have stayed back when given it as a problem, so
Brownie points go to J&
M. If missed, J&M have an equal race, and if hit, they
get returns against
the blot on the ace-point.

b) Clearing the bar or not is another problem we often
face. Here J&M decided
that now was the time to clear, as if Green escapes, White
is well-placed to
attack on the ace-point. For money, it is too close to
call, although 17-8 is
still narrowly correct, but trailing 6-0 Crawford in a
match, gammons do not
count, making the plan of attacking on the ace-point less
attractive.
The other big downside of clearing the bar was shown by
Green's reply of
boxes ... which helped Brains and Drains to a lucky clean
sweep."
