PAST TTTs
Tric Trac Tourno 30 Report

Due to the increase in numbers of players in recent TTTs I set this one up to be a maximum 26 player TTT - the largest ever. 24 players in 2 rounds held in the 1600+ and the 1700+ Lobbies. Each Lobby would have a Bar Tender who would keep things going by serving drinks, posting up gammons and backgammon reports, ward off non TTT players from setting up games, but offering them drinks. Meanwhile I, once having got everybody playing, would deal with the 132 reports that were coming my way. Then, the 3 top players from each Lobby and the 2 (over-worked under-played) Bar Tenders would play a Final Play-off. As long as we didn't have a draw we would know who, after now a 160 games played, who our TTT30 winner was.

Registration had opened about 6 days before the TTT. The members of the TTT mailing list got to hear about it first, then a couple of days later, I posted up a notice on the Funcom Bulletin Board. Due to most of the other posts on the Bulletin Board, I, like Beds is doing for Funcom Party 2002, posted up again daily. The saddest thing about the Bulletin Board is that, I'm sure, regular players are just not visiting it these days because of the content. Funcom could sort it if they had the time and will. All they need to do is delete the offensive posts - and don't think they cannot - I run bulletin boards and it is easy to delete and block unwanted message writers. I've seen Funcom, in the distant past, delete unwanted messages on their Bulletin Board, so that at least is possible. All players have user names and passwords so they could block the offensive writers from using the Bulletin Board - or even better, just block them entirely. And if Funcom are thinking that the rudeness writers will stop of their own accord, think again: They have the BB now, it is their domain now, they know they can post anything without any impunity. How long will it be before they suss out how to post up offensive pictures to enhance their offensive words? Maybe then Funcom will stop being guilty of allowing their venue to be used for Race Hatred - one of the most abhorrent hatreds there is.

Anyway, this is supposed to be TTT report, so let's get back to that ! Most players had registered at least a day before the TTT was due to start. We had some new TTT players, so I sent them an email just to make sure they knew what they would be doing. As usual we had some last minute sign-ups, so I had my usual last minute reshuffles to wade through. We had a TTT Barmaid on board, so I was reasonably confident about being able to handle a full house. About 3 registered players could not make it, but sent word to that effect, so their places were taken by the reserves. Other players had registered but were not online. Some had sent word that they were on their way, so their places were held. Others were missing and had not sent word so their places were given to those who were online and ready to play.

One new idea for the Bar Tender was to post up reports of gammons and backgammons in the Lobbies. My 'puter was groaning as I tried set things up to forward reports to the Barmaid (who was now dishing out drinks and hints as to who she might be.) At last I thought I had reports going to her, but they were not. I tried again. Aggg, all players were now up and running (which was good) but it also means that scores are by then starting to flood in and I need to process them. I spoke some harsh words to my 'puter, but it didn't respond well. Meanwhile it wasn't taking players long to suss out who our BarMaid was - old valued friendships are hard to break and  players soon recognized the style. I tried again, but failed to send reports to her email address.

And on BigWolf made it into Funcom and we found Hunt so we had a full 12 players in the 1700+ Lobby. At one stage I thought I had 13 players in the 1600+ Lobby, but I recounted and could not find Himbo present, so there were actually 12. So we the maximum possible 24 + 1 Barmaid - so we were heading for a 7 player Final Play-off.

We had various disasters along the way. My 'puter was one of them. It was croaking like an olde mans dying breath. In the 1700+ Lobby BigWolf and Hunt were way behind other players. In the 1600+ Lobby Excelent played a 3 games then vanished and Cugy played most of his/her games but then vanished as well. Bigwolf played most of his games, but crashed again so his scores we carried through and players than had not played him were awarded 1 point. Hunt then vanished having played less than 1/2 his games, so his games were not recorded and all scores against him scrubbed. In the 1600+ Lobby Cugy did a BigWolf and Excelent a Hunt. Sound complicated - well, it was!

Just to make things even more interesting, some reports were wrong - straight losses reported instead of gammons. One of these games was a Grant game and, once it was established that the game had in fact been a gammon, put him in the top 3 in the 1700+ Room. Grant, a long term TTT player and tipped (by me) as a future winner was through to the Final. Fiona did her best ever and gained a place as did, having won a backgammon and gammon,  K_pax.

In the 1600+ Room Di-ablo and netmusen were through with mecpyp and Peace_Love both on 9 points each. These two needed to play a play-off to see who would go through. They started but as they did so, Di-albo had to drop out of the TTT, so another Final Play-off place became available, so both mecpyp and Peace_Love went through. Complicated ? - Yup, I told you it was !

But The Barmaid had by now long finished serving drinks and just about all players had sussed that it was in fact Cassie25 - even though Cassie has not been online in Funcom for a good while now, such is her presence and popularity that players often ask if the Bar Tender is Cassie. This week it was. But this TTT was taking ages, she never got those reports she should have done and having said her goodbyes moved on to another Pub. I tried to raise her, but the hour was late and she was probably deep in a money game or deep tucked up in bed, so she was not present for our Final Play-off. So we had a 6 player (15 games) Final Play-off  TTT.

Netmusen started off well with a win then a gammon. Grant started off badly with two losses and hence deja-vu. Fiona got a in, a loss then a gammon. K-pax lost three then won a gammon. Peace_love started off with a win, but then started gathering losses. mecpyp, started by losing, but won also won one. The likely winners looked like being netmusen, Grant or Fiona. Net finshed first on 6 points, Grant won his last game by a (second) gammon to also finish on 6 points leaving Fiona needing a gammon at least against mecpyp. There were a good number of watchers, many I suspect willing Fiona on, but it was not to be and she finished on 5 points..

15 of the 15 games are now posted.

So, for yet another time we needed a Final Final Play-off to establish our winner. Netmusen, last weeks winner versus Grant the likely contender. Net played a conservative Pisa type game while Grant ran 1 of his two back-markers round. Net's towers got taller and Grant held his solo back-marker back waiting for a likely hit. Surely it would come, but slowly Net's towers became walls and Grant's wall was of no use given Net's rolls. So, it ended, as all TTTs must with just the one winner and this week, as it was last week the winner was netmusen - hard luck Grant.

So ended the largest ever TTT. Is such a large TTT a good idea. Given that it took 5 hours to play, I'd say no. Thankfully most players are dedicated TTT players, so players stuck it out, but I don't think it a good idea to push players patience so far - that or I need to change the fast, frantic, fun ! title.

So it's back to the drawing board for me before the next one. First of all, I need to get a new fast computer, but meanwhile I might revert to 12 player TTTs.
Then, when I've broken in my new computer, I'll try another 26 player TTT. That or I need 2 Bar Tenders to help me.

Thanx to all the players who took part and to the spectators who dropped in.
