This was the first DownUnderers
Tric Trac Tourno held on PM. As usual in a DownUnderers TTT we were only a few in number - 6 players though 9 did register. Actually smaller TTTs are probably as much fun in their own rite as full 12 player TTTs are: Players have much more of a chance to gauge what the other players results are and therefore what they need to win by in their next game. They are not such hurried affairs and players have more time to chat and be social. In the last TTT we had a 39% gammon rate - the highest ever. I put this down to TTT players playing better TTT backgammon. In this TTT we did not have 1 single gammon. Tell you what, I'll not even try to explain why ! 030478 and Zarin looked like our fall guys. They both lost their first 3 games and both looked like candidates for a bag of marbles (given if a player loses all their games.) I was considering asking them to make the game between them the last games they played but they both then went and won a game each and thus spoiled the chances of a first ever "Marbles Final." Mycroft was looking good and didn't lose until game 13. MistyLady and AbbycazNZ were also by this stage still on only 1 loss and Yabble was on 2 losses. Game 14 (of 15) was a crucial game and was won by MistyLady. So now the maths got really interesting. In the last game Mycroft needed a straight win to draw level with Misty to force a Final Play-off or a gammon to win the Tournament. Yabble needed at gammon to win the tournament. The game went Yabble's way and it looked like she would win the gammon (or possibly a backgammon) and thus the TTT. But a blot was left which Mycroft hit giving him a foothold on the game. Then Mycroft hit another of Yabble's stones and it was game back on. Mycroft built a six prime in his Home Quarter and started to bear off. Gammon saved. But Yabble had about 9 stones off - could Mycroft really win from this situation ? He obviously had not given up hope and now played for the win. He beared off well, not from the back in this situation but as rapidly as he could. Yabble continued to dance for a while and soon it really looked possible for Mycroft to win the game that had looked not long ago as if it would be a backgammon. At last Yabble excaped Mycroft's Home Quarter and skuttled round the board. It was all in the hands of the Dice Gods now. They smiled favourable on Yabble who won the game by about 2 pips. It was a great game to watch and I'm sure both players lost pounds during it. Here are the moves played:
So Misty was our
only player on 4 wins and thus became the Winner of this TTT - her 1st
TTT win.
