Live TTT in Ryan's Bar, London

We had a strong turnout for this TTT. John B was chasing his second live TTT win on the trot, Mick V is chasing his third trophy, Dan long ago sussed the format, Stef is becoming a dab hand at TTT play as well, Simon M. was a TTT finalist in the Sunday TTT last a Live in London 2002, Sean was back from Canada. Geoff C. was in his first TTT but his backgammoning skills would I was sure pull him through, Dave R. was joining us for the first time and ready to lose his TTT virginity and MMM joined the pack too.  

Gammon. That's the word that got bandied around during the evening. 17 out of the 36 (47.21%) resulted in gammons. This blows the previous record of 39.6% out of the water. I was asked during the evening if I make a profit on running live TTTs. My answer was that if players don't score many gammons (and thus win miniature bottles of booze) I stand a chance of doing so. Oh well never mind as a good friend of mine used to say.

I always like it when we have 2 players come equal top. It means a Final Play-off and a crowd around the last match. Gammons mean nothing is these situations - just a straight win will do. Even better is when we have 3 players finish equal top. Then gammons become important again. And this evening we had John B. Stef and Dan all finish on 9.5 points. Mick V had narrowly missed out on gaining a seat in the Play-off, Geoff C. had done well in his first TTT, MMM had come somewhere about middle, Sean was not on backgammon form this evening and Dave R. had been a lamb to the slaughter but had I hope enjoyed his evening.

John B. Stef and Dan go into a Final Play-off.

John B. v Stef was the first match played. John won it. Stef then played Dan and Stef won that. Dan needed a straight win to force a Final Final Play-off. It was a bruising and brutal match which swung John's way. But a backgame was always a possibility and both players knew it. John quite wisely didn't take Dan lightly for Dan was always quietly planning his comeback. But Dan missed the blots that eventually came his way and the rest was, as they say, history. The backgammon happened and I lost yet another two miniatures. Oh well never mind; it was a good TTT and that's what counts.
