The June 2004 Live TTT at Ryan's Bar, Stoke Newington Church St, London. "Let me see" I thought, "Gutshot on Sunday, Fox Reformed on Monday, TTT on Wednesday, Nicholas Nickleby on Thursday - that's a lot of backgammon going on all in one week - I bet I have a low turnout at this TTT." Well done Players - you broke the record of attendance at a Ryan's Bar monthly TTT ! Good thing I'm not a Weather Forecaster ! With 14 players and thus 91 matches play would have to be quick. The standard of players was well varied from the likes of Paul Lamford, John Broomfield and Al Hogg to two new TTT players Shez and George. TTTs are usually maximum 12 player affairs. If there are more than 12 I then consider running 2 Pre-TTTs and a 6 player Final play-off. This works well for 16 + players but 14 is stuck somewhere there in the middle and means me keeping players playing otherwise we don't get though the tournament. In the past I've been pretty lax about start time simply because the pressure has not been on and TTTs are Round Robins, but if more than 12 players are going to turn up to Ryan's Bar TTTs I'll have to insist that players turn up on time in case I need to adopt the 2 x Pre-TTTs and Final Play-off system. That or I need to get a mobile phone. Damn - I hate the things ! Now to the TTT itself: Paul Lamford (gandp) was with us and he set himself up with an early lead though his usual fast and dominating play. Others were left to play catch-up. Ad they tried - with 20 games to play the TTT was still winnable by 5 or 6 players. This, I must report, didn't include Shez who's results appear very good but, moe importantly to my mind, he seemed to be enjoying himself, was being given numerous tips from his opponents and was learning from them. George - our other TTT virgin - started of stormingly well but couldn't maintain his standard in the end. A big highlight of the evening was when Zoe backgammoned her partner Sean - she was also convinced that this was going to be the evening that she would at last win a trophy all to herself and let all know about it too. Tony's results took a dive in the TTT as did John B's. Justin threatened to catch Paul Lamford but didn't quite get there which left, in the last 4 matches to play, Mick V as the only player to be able to catch Paul. He didn't quite manage it though he had a damned good go at it. Paul took his 6th TTT win. Gammon/Backgammon rate was 33%. That combined with the high number of players we ran out of miniature bottles (gammon/backgammon prizes) and as such I owe a few players a bottle or two. See you next month on Wednesday 7th July when you can claim them. There will be another event in July as well BACKGAMMON IN THE PARK Saturday 17th July in Clissold Park. At last year's event we had about 70 players. DON'T MISS IT - IT'S A GREAT DAY OUT !
