Report TTT183

Live Ryan's Bar, April 2005

14 players turned up by 7.45 p.m. and yet another arrived just after that. 14 players means 91 games to play - a tough number of matches to get through by 11.00 p.m. and I must allow time for a Final play-off if needed.

Had we had 16 players I'd have run 2 x 8 player Pre-TTTs with 3 players from each going into a Final Play-off but 15 is an ugly number so I elected (for the first time ever in a live TTT) to close at 14 players. As it happened the 15 person didn't seem too perturbed about not being able to play and seemed pretty happy with the deal he got when he bought one of the boards I have for sale.

So should I take registrations before the evening ? I've never done so before because I like to keep TTTs casual but if I get the sort of numbers we got this month I should consider it. Ummm, watch out for next months email when I'll let you know what I've decided to do.

Zoe had a shocker - only 1 win from 13 games. and she was annoyed with herself for winning that 1 because she ruined her chances of a bag of marbles for a 100% loss rate. Not sure why it all went so wrong for Zoe - usually she is a contender for the title.

Hayley (in her second TTT) showed an improvement - I expect things will get better again from now onwards.

I must say a big THANK YOU to Sean W. for making the spreadsheet larger than a 12 player to accommodate the 14 players. I don't think it could have done his TTT concentration any good because his gammon rate was low this evening.

Justin and Sean Gasman had poor starts but raised their play towards the mid to end of the tournament - but by then it was a case of too little too late.

Max took an early lead (and gammoned Justin in what was probably record time and moves) was the first to finish all his matches and then watched as other players achieved higher scores than he.

Suzy's gammon rate was good but her loss rate was too high to put her in serious contention. Tony got an early backgammon, a couple of gammons but suffered too many losses.

Alexis had a good win rate, but was low on gammons. Al reported (by Al) missed out on gammons by whiskers.

Miranda was consistent but won too few gammons. John B had a slow start but a better finish and hence fell into the category of too little too late.

Alef was having a quite TTT until after dinner when he got into the groove and win 3 gammons on the trot hence threatening Diane.

But the star of the evening pretty well though out was Diane. She kicked off well, lost nothing before dinner (had at 50 of 91 games), dropped a couple after dinner giving Alef a chance but came back to ring the bell with more gammons won. Her last match was played for pride and was dubbed the lap of honour - she had won the trophy already. Bravo Diane. I first met Diane a couple or so years ago when she came to watch a Monday evening tournament at The Fox. She had been too nervous to play. But she had played and played and learnt - this was her reward evening and first backgammon trophy.
